Lofted” in the deep soft feather bed on my grandparent’s ranch, I would often wake up in the early early dark hours of the morning to hear my grandparents stirring in the kitchen preparing to do the outside chores in the cool early morning. The kitchen light would be the only light that was on in the entire house. I could smell the wonderful odors of strong coffee and home cured bacon.  And, I could hear the “Farm Report” rapidly spitting out the weather, cattle prices, and grain prices.  My grandparents had a box radio-record player that was their life line to the outside world and ranching economics. This old box radio that sat on a table performed its ritual every morning but Sunday. In the afternoon and evenings, we raised the lid on the old radio and played Classical Texas Music with old 45’s, some translucent green ones were my favorites just because of their oddity . Even though, as all 45’s were, it was awkward to operate; we had such fun with the music of Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys, Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, and Sons Of The Pioneers and songs that have become classics: Home of San Antone, Waltz Across Texas, San Antonio Rose, Hey Hey Good Looking and countless other tunes that have been memorized in many Texas hearts.
